Chief Joseph RamosChief Joseph A. Ramos - San Diego Community College District Police Department

Chief Joseph Ramos was born and raised in Los Angeles Ca. Joe became a member of the San Diego Police Department in 1988 and served our community for 30 years. 

Joe attended San Diego State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. Joe is a graduate of numerous Command Colleges and the 259th session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico Va.     

Joe’s experience with the San Diego Police Department includes supervisory positions as a sergeant and lieutenant overseeing the Gang Suppression Team, Beach Team, and SWAT Team.  During his 19 years with the SWAT Team, Joe was involved in dozens of critical incidents as an Operator, Team Leader, Emergency Negotiations Liaison Sergeant, and SWAT Commanding Officer. As the Captain of Traffic Division, Joe oversaw major traffic collision investigations, Special Events, Motors, and the Air Support Unit. Throughout his career, Joe has worked with local and federal agencies during the planning and management of countless large scale events. From political events such as the RNC, Presidential debates, and recent presidential rallies, to sporting events such as the Super Bowl, World Series, Rock & Roll Marathons and the 2016 MLB All-Star Game. Joe has played an integral role in the operational planning, security, and facilitation of these events.          

Joe is an instructor for the San Diego Regional Police Academy and the San Diego Community College District. He provides instruction for newly promoted supervisors in Critical Incident Management, Homicide Scene Management, and a host of other supervisory courses. In 2001, Joe was responsible for the development of San Diego’s Active Shooter and Rapid Deployment plan. Since that time, he has trained thousands of officers from local, state, and federal agencies in the response and management of Active Shooter incidents.   

Chief Joseph Ramos was sworn in as SDCCD’s Police Chief on August 12, 2018. He looks forward to assisting SDCCD PD with their mission of providing a safe and positive learning environment for all of our students, staff, and communities.
