In addition to transfer agreements with four-year universities, the district is emphasizing career education programs that prepare students for good-paying jobs in fields such as healthcare, biotech, welding, and IT/cybersecurity. The SDCCD is San Diego’s largest provider of workforce training and education, and a recent study showed these programs generate a $1.6 billion economic impact on our region, the equivalent of four Super Bowls.

“There is a massive cultural shift happening right now between going to college and
entering or advancing in the workforce,” said SDCCD Chancellor Carlos O. Cortez. “The
district is ready to serve the community and leverage resources to ensure that students
are successful beyond the classroom and have access to transferring to a university,
finding a career, and more critically have access to basic needs.”
Due to a surge in demand, the deadline for applying to the San Diego Promise, free
tuition program at City, Mesa, and Miramar colleges, has been extended to August 22.
Already, more than 1,925 students have enrolled in the program, which also provides
access to textbook grants and specialized counseling. The fall cohort will join 1,400
of their peers, who are entering their second year of the two-year program.
In addition to dozens of new faculty and staff, welcoming students this fall will
be two new college presidents. Ashanti Hands, Ed.D., begins the new academic year
as Mesa College’s president and Tina M. King, Ed.D., recently started as president
of the College of Continuing Education.
Registration is still open. At just $46 per unit, California community colleges offer
the most affordable higher education option in the nation. To enroll at City, Mesa,
and Miramar colleges, and the College of Continuing Education (which begins Tuesday,
September 6) apply and register here.
