Update

August 2, 9 p.m.

I am deeply saddened by the series of events that took place on our campus early Wednesday morning when a vehicle pursuit involving the San Diego Police Department ended with an officer-involved shooting at Mesa College. I want to inform you that all lots and roads will be reopened this evening and that all regular work, classes, services, and activities will continue as usual tomorrow, Thursday, August 3.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the Police, College and District leadership, as well as each one of you for your cooperation, support and patience during this challenging time.  While we did our best to manage this crisis, we never lost sight of the fact that lives were lost and others will be forever changed as a result of what occurred in our space.

Experiencing the loss of life in a college setting is profoundly unsettling as our purpose is centered around nurturing potential, dreams and the future of our community. Such incidents remind us of the preciousness of life and time, and how crucial it is to support our students (and each other) by creating conditions that matter for them to feel seen, valued, supported, and encouraged to walk boldly in their purpose, every chance we get.

Again, thank you for your cooperation, support and patience today. Your actions and compassion truly make a difference in times like these.

Sincerely,

Ashanti Hands, Ed.D.

Early this morning, a police-involved shooting took place on the Mesa College campus along Mesa College Circle near Lot 1. The incident involved officers from the San Diego Police Department who were pursuing a suspect. Currently, there is no indication that anyone from the college was involved.

All regular work, classes, services, and activities are expected to continue today. The campus is secure and people should report to work as usual. A police investigation is currently underway.

A portion of Lot 1 has been re-opened and can be accessed from Marlesta. Lots 2 and 3 remain closed at this time. Lots 2 and 3 will be closed until further notice, as will Mesa College Circle near the athletics fields. College Police will be directing people to park in other locations and parking enforcement will be suspended today. The lower campus will accessible via the Genesee Avenue/Marlesta Drive entrance.

Thanks for your cooperation. Additional updates will be shared as more information becomes available. For additional information on campus parking and access, contact College Police Dispatch at 619-388-6405.
