Among the notable commencement speakers scheduled is Katya Echazarreta, a City College alumna who became the first Mexican-born woman in space. She will speak at City College’s commencement on May 23.
About 5,883 graduates from City, Mesa and Miramar colleges will receive degrees and certificates, and increase of 6% over 2023. Meanwhile, 10,554 vocational program certificates and high school diplomas will be awarded to College of Continuing Education graduates, an 11% increase over 2023.
Below is the schedule for commencements in the San Diego Community College District, listed in chronological order and with the number of graduates.
San Diego Miramar College (1,206 graduates): 10 a.m. on Friday, May 17, at the college campus.
San Diego City College (1,008 graduates): 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park.
San Diego Mesa College (1,678 graduates): 2 p.m. on Friday, May 24, at Merrill Douglas Stadium on campus. Mesa’s commencement speaker, David Weiss, is an older, non-traditional student. As a young man, he firmly believed that college was not for him. It wasn’t until he was older, and in therapy, that he realized that he did dream of going to college. He enrolled in Mesa to study music, now plays and signs in a band, and is graduating with an Associate of Arts Degrees in Music Studies.
San Diego College of Continuing Education (10,486 vocational program certificates and 68 high school diplomas): 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park.
